Old instruments, for the most part, have a shellac coating, which, in addition to an alcohol base, also contains a fatty component. Because of this, there are difficulties in how to make friends with modern, usually acid coatings (polyurethane or acrylic). Things are even more complicated with polyester (they are called "piano varnish") coatings. The choice of varnish quality, type and requirements for the result form a fairly wide range of prices. Cleaning of metal parts is also necessary, of course, it is possible to replace rollers, hinges, pedal pads at will or if necessary, polishing, replacing the garnishing cloth of the pedal lyre and music stand.
